Practicing African American Postpartum Care
Program Overview
Practicing African American Postpartum Care is a program of Shafia Monroe Consulting/Birthing CHANGE. The program was formed to teach African postpartum traditions that were practiced by 20th century African American midwives, as a way to continue African traditions, teach mothering, include the father, and create a community to care for the new family. This is considered advanced postpartum training.
The program teaches three core values (for the mind, body, and spirit) that are needed to help new mothers fully recuperate after the birth of their baby, using postpartum hands-on traditions, rituals, and spirituality. These practices soothe the mind and the postpartum body and calm the newborn. Participants who take this training will learn African American postpartum traditions and rituals and how to apply them.
With African American postpartum care, maternal morbidity is reduced and postpartum celebration rituals for the mother and her baby are practiced.
