Train as a SMC Full Circle Doula Birth Companion, learn the ways of caring and serving based on the legacy of the 20th Century African American midwife. This training was created in 2002, and it is the first Black owned doula training program in the nation. Guess who? Me and younger brother, Walter Monroe. We were two years a part. He was shot and killed at 19. He was defending a friend in a fight, and the boy shot him. He died on the street seven blocks from our house. After that as a young midwife, I began teaching every Black youth, emergency care. Throw your coat over the injured, elevate their feet, apply pressure. Treat for shock. Know CPR. Call the ambulance immediately. Some areas are war zones and survival skills must be taught. Stress is dangerous for postpartum mothers. Family members and birth workers need to protect them from the negative news/social media, and people; instead play healing music of their choice, give them plenty of firm shoulder massages with sandalwood oil and serve them a meal to reduce or prevent inflammation such as this black eye peas stew cooked in a ginger turmeric base. This type of meal protects from postpartum depression.
